Located on a modest hill called the Poggio, it dominates the city of medieval origin. In 1443, the Castle was extensively modified with the addition of a body in the valley, intended for firearms. In 1554, construction began on a massive protective work called Bastia, traces of which have recently emerged, and a restoration of the upper part of the building was carried out. In 1607 work was carried out that led to the outlining of the final shape of the Castle, after the redevelopment of the Gulf defense system, wanted by the Serenissima.

  • Doria Castle

In the town of Portovenere, a pentagonal fortress dominates the other structures. The most significant part dates back to the 16th century. During the 17th century, it was surrounded by a curtain wall to ensure the defense of the older buildings. The bastions provided a lookout over the sea, while the front, dating back to the 16th century, was intended to prevent possible attacks from land. The fortress, one of the most impressive works of military architecture to testify to the power of the Republic of Genoa, has a pentagonal design, with the southern bastion extending towards the sea.
