The castle was part of the defensive system built by the Genovese during the Middle Ages, along with plenty of other historical edifices, of which the Aurora Tower is the most notable. The twelfth-century cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist is the ancient oratory.

The bastions provided a lookout over the sea, while the front, dating back to the 16th century, was intended to prevent possible attacks from land. The fortress, one of the most impressive works of military architecture to testify to the power of the Republic of Genoa, has a pentagonal design, with the southern bastion extending towards the sea.
